Sarah 101

Hello guys, nice to meet everybody!

My name is Sarah, I am 21 years old and was born, live and study in Innsbruck, Austria. No, we don't have kangaroos here and you would be surprised how often people ask me this. Mozart, Freud, mountains, people who lock their children in basements? That's us.
I'm studying medicine in my 5th semester, but actually the semester ends on Tuesday, so let's already say 6th. Vacation, yay!
I have a sister who just started studying medicine too, but in Vienna. My parents are both judges and hope that at least one of us would study law, so they were very disappointed that we are both becoming doctors. I also have a cat called Mischa (I know it's a guy's name, but she's female. She is named after Hannibal Lecter's sister Mischa in Hannibal Rising), who is a big hunter and managed to bring home animals of ten different species. She's also very aggressive and very cute (deadly combination).

So why am I studying medicine? That's a difficult question with an easy answer: I did not have a plan B. When I was 16, we went with school to some "Day of the Brain" event in university and we listed to some lectures and could hold brains and I thought: that's cool, that's what I want to do later. I never really found any other field that would interest me as much as medicine does. In order to study medicine here you have to pass an entrance exam (2500 applicants for 400 places), I passed on the first try and so the situation was quite clear. Now, if I could not study medicine anymore, I would probably study shipbuilding. I can't really explain why, but I love ships.

I want to become a neurosurgeon - I knew that already before I started university and I knew it before Grey's Anatomy. My parents want me to look into other fields too, but the more I see of other specialties, the more I'm sure that neurosurgery is the way to go. I definitely want to become a surgeon of any kind, I loved the dissection course we had, I like anatomy and the brain just fascinated me. A lot. I did a four week long internship at the Neurosurgical Department of the hospital in Vienna and I had such a great time there. I loved finally learning something practical, not all the boring stuff like biochemistry that we learn in university. I was also able to attend a microsurgery course and I love suturing, especially with teeny tiny threads and instruments (the thread is thinner than a hair and the needle is only a few millimeters long).

I am traveling a lot, unfortunately so far only inside Europe. My boyfriend lives in Poland, so I'm spending a lot of time there and he is a journalist for ski jumping, so if I have time I accompany him to competitions. I like the north of Europe a lot, I love Finland (contrary to common prejudice, I find Finnish people very kind and helpful. Hi, Mia!) and Norway, in fact, I'm applying for an Erasmus spot for a semester abroad in Oslo at the moment.
My dream is to go to New York City soon and I'm hoping to fly there in April for a short vacation.

I like to read, of course, but I'm having troubles finding time and attention to read because I spend most time in front of my computer. The last book I read was The Fault In Our Stars, which is one of the most beautiful and heart-breaking books I have ever read and I always find it difficult to read any other book after reading something so great. By the way, I have an unsigned copy of TFiOS because Amazon DE had a big screw up and apparently employ people who can't read and calculate how many preorders they will need.
And TV shows. If you already think you watch too many shows, what should I say then? I am watching (in no order whatsoever): How I Met Your Mother, The Big Bang Theory, Grey's Anatomy (or as I like to call it: How Not To Be A Doctor), Sherlock BBC, Bones, Dexter, Gossip Girl, Pretty Little Liars, Community, New Girl, 2 Broke Girls. I watch Doctor Who from time to time, but I got stuck in season 4 and I can't really bring myself to watch it on a regular level. It's a great show, but for me it's hard to watch it one episode after another like I do with other shows.

Things I dislike: fangirling over Youtube persons (especially Charlie - I know he is cute and funny, but he is also just a person and in my opinion a tiny bit overrated. I find Alex Day funnier and Eddplant the better singer. That's it.), people who always have to say something even if they don't know anything, fishing for pity, vegetables.

And some random facts about me: I'm messy, but everything needs to have a system. I'm very meticulous, for example everything that I write that is related to each other has to be written with the same pen and I sort my socks by color. And I love nail polish, the more colorful, the better.

That's it for now, I'm really looking forward to read more of your blog post, you all seem like such interesting people and I can't wait to get to know you more!

DFTBA,
Sarah

  1. ...I want your life! *makes grabby hands at medicine* (or alternatively, I want your parents' jobs)

Ah, anatomy! Dissections! Neurosurgery must be utterly fascinating. The human brain is amazingly complex and almost everything of ours depends on it. I loved it when in anthropology we had a course that utilized neuroanthropology, a field of anthropology that pursues to explain some cultural and behavioral phenomena via brain chemistry and biology, a lot. I think that course was my favorite course ever at university, certainly taught me a lot more than any other course.

I have to ask, how steady is your hand? Freakishly steady? xDDD

Yeah, we Finns are not as difficult to talk to as people assume. We just do not do small talk. Or smile without a reason. We also prefer you stand few feet away from us unless we know you, in which case you are allowed to stand a foot closer than others. xD Ever visited here?

Also, you should watch Body of Proof if you have yet to check it out. It's about a neurosurgeon gone Medical Examiner!

    1. You may not be doing that great a job in convincing me Finns are friendly. HAHAHA.

    2. Too many comebacks...can't choose! asdfghj! xD

  2. I cannot fully comprehend how the brain works, how we can have memories - I mean, I know the biochemistry and the neuroanatomy behind it, but I just can't *imagine* it. And that's something I find very fascinating.

My hand is steady, maybe not freakishly steady, but I can do stuff XD

I am exactly like that. I'm not a super open person, when I don't want to smile then I don't smile and I don't like people who come to close to me without me allowing it. And I'm not a big fan of small talk.
I've been to Lahti last year in March ;)

Body of Proof sounds good, I'll definitely check that out!

  3. I really wanted to do some research in AI a few years back, and I thought I would become a brain specialist (but I'm headed for rocks now). Congrats on the entrance exam, btw.

I'm so looking forward to learning from what you have to say! I've been studying neural activity too (and doing dissections :D), but we're focused on animals, (comparing an octopus' axon with a mammal's, for example), and we can't go too deep within each subjects.

    Everybody's so fascinating!

  4. You can be a real life McDreamy! (this is me watching too many tv shows)

How do you study medicine and still have so much time to watch TV?

Also, I don't like vegetables either.

    1. We only really have one big exam at the end of the year in July, so until end of May I'm doing nothing (except watching TV shows) and then I'm studying. That's not the smartest system, I should study all year and don't have stress at the end, but that's not how it works XD

    2. So THAT's the secret of having time to watch TV and be all doctory!

...meanwhile, my summer vacation time starts in May. xD

    3. That explains a lot!. Sneaky sneaky !

  6. Your parents were disappointed you did medicine. Wow. Tough crowd to please :P
Also, Mischa is a girls name from where I come :)

    1. Same thought about Mischa being a girl's name.
      Mischa Barton anybody?

    2. True, forgot about Mischa Barton!

    3. Mischa Barton came to mind too.
...Somehow I sense we all, at one point in our life were watching that damn The O.C. series. xD

Oh well, Mischa, and it's variants, like Misha (Misha Collins, anyone? Hilarious on Twitter!) is one of those unisex names. Can go either way.

    4. I tried watching it again lately, but somehow it was just... lame XD

    5. I started thinking it was lame already towards the end half of the series...I wouldn't even dare trying to watch it again now, years later! xD You are a brave woman.

  7. That's why I like Grey's Anatomy, sometimes it's so ridiculous. Discussing your marital issues while you're performing a brain surgery, love it. Well... that and Lexie Grey.

  8. Grey's is awesome. Well, was, I've not been fond of the latest season. In fact, I've pretty much stopped watching the show. (Now that I think about it, I should pull a marathon and watch through the first season again) At any case, I like the humour in the show! xD And the occasional awesomely thrilling super ultra mega episodes xDDDD

If I feel like watching something more down to earth, I go to ER.

    1. Totally.
To this day, while it's not my all time favorite TV show (right now, the new version of Battlestar Galactica is), I have to say it was the best written TV show I have ever seen (Well, the few last seasons did go down hill - too many new faces, not well developed etc). The other summer I sat down and watched all of the 15 seasons and couldn't help but to be baffled by how well developed most of the characters were, how well the show was done, how good the writing was.

I hear Steven Spielberg originally meant it to be a movie and the pilot reflects that. I can't help but to wonder what it would have been like if it had been a movie. :D

  9. I just rewatched until Season 6 and I really like season 1-4, but since then it got a bit... bleeh. Except the shooter episodes, those were really good!
In general it's just so ridiculous, having neurosurgeries without microscope, and pretty much everybody who comes into that hospital has either an aneurysm or a brain tumor... and how crappy is a hospital where you have one neurosurgeon and one general surgeon and one trauma surgeon?

But if you ignore all the medical facts and just focus on the relationship stories and stuff like that, it's a great show XD

    2. I agree on the seasons. Although, I remember not being fond of one of those seasons from 2-4. I think it was because Derek decided to be an utter douche for too many episodes all of a sudden or something. But yes! From the newer seasons the shooter episodes...those were awesome.

Wait... I thought those things Derek looks through at the brain while doing his thing were some sort of microscope dealies? Eh, whaddaiknow, I'm no neurologist. xD

Also, they do hint that there are other neurosurgeons in the hospital (at least one). But Derek is the best one. And the show simply never follows those other mysterious doctors they refer to every now and then. I also think Webber and Bailey are at least both general surgeon types, so there are at least two of those that we see? I think trauma is the one field where they haven't hinted at another guy. -ponders- Can't remember.

    3. I love Grey's, but totally agree seasons 1-4 were the best, season 2 being my all-time favorite. After that it got a little ridiculous - especially that season when the writers had Izzie constantly hallucinating and George killed off by a bus. But the shooter episodes were definitely an exception. Lately it's been just okay.

And yeah, I also always assumed Derek was looking through a microscope! Now I'm going to be paying attention more when I watch those fake surgeries.

    4. Derek has those magnifying glasses, but when I worked in Neurosurgery they did everything with big microscopes. Here is a picture I took in the OR in Vienna: http://img28.imageshack.us/img28/5844/nchsc.jpg

    5. I'm pretty sure I've seen Derek use microscope dealies in surgery too. *narrows eyes* Oh well, whatever. It's Grey's, not ER. xD Also, awesome picture! :D
